A BIT ABOUT US

Our Background

Whitney Art Works, a family business, was formed in 2004 in Portland ME as a multipart venture that included art transport, art storage, and a gallery which supported multiple contemporary artists and their projects.  As of 2016 Whitney Art Works focused on professional art services including air-ride climate art transport, installation, international shipping, and climate art storage.  Close communication with clients and partners, and attention to detail, are central to how Whitney Art Works operates.

Co-owners Peter and Deb Whitney, have been partners for their 40-year careers in the field.

Peter studied architectural and art history, and started transporting art in 1985 for Fine Arts Express, which continued into managerial and administrative roles for major art transport companies in the US and UK. His employment has included roles in operations, collection management, facilities build-outs, and exhibition tour co-ordination. He worked at Sotheby's for three years in pre-and post-sale operations.

Deb is a practicing artist.  Her work experience has ranged from preparator and administrative museum positions to dozens of freelance projects in the US and the UK.  Installation, packing, and art fair work, along with her curatorial work at Whitney Art Works, a contemporary gallery in based in Greenport NY and Portland Maine for 12  years, and the East End Arts Council in NY, have marked a long and varied career. As a co-owner Deb makes Whitney Art Works one of only a handful of women-owned art services companies in the US.

Mahlon Whitney, daughter and freelancer, has been in training since the age of two.  A recent graduate, photographer and cultural anthropologist, Mahlon is often spotted on Whitney Art Works projects.

Izzy, the resident trucker Sato dog, and Huey, everyone's favorite Staffy, also make frequent appearances.
